Resourcing the spiritual journey of older people

Messy Vintage

BRF's Messy Vintage: A new way to bring 'church' to older people in care homes, in churches and in the community. Creativity, Celebration, Christ-centredness, Mission, Hospitality.

‘I don't always get to church now as the service is too long. I am 91 and the Messy Vintage service time is just the right length for me. Our afternoon tea is delicious.’

‘Messy Vintage enables people within our care to engage in their spirituality. We have lots of fun with crafts, and the singing uplifts us all.’

Messy Vintage is a way into worship for older people, regardless or their background or faith journey. It has come out of the worldwide Messy Church movement, which is a fun and creative way of ‘being church’ for families from all kinds of backgrounds.

Messy Vintage creates a gentle, sociable and enjoyable way into worship for people in later life, reflecting the Messy Church approach and values:

  • Christ-centred
  • based on creativity, hospitality and celebration
  • it is inclusive and, where possible, intergenerational

Messy Vintage has been developed by members of The Gift of Years network in Jersey, and can be adapted for any setting – in the community, in churches or in care homes.

Hosting Messy Vintage for 'Make a meal of it'

Make a meal of it is an initiative of Christians Together Against Loneliness (of which The Gift of Years is a member). The idea is simple: use a meal event to reach out to the older people in your community.

Why not download the 'Make a meal of it' resource pack and include a Messy Vintage session as part of your event?

It’s so much easier to start a conversation when your hands are busy creating something, there is laughter and busyness all around – and you know there will be lunch or tea to follow!

Here are four Messy Vintage sessions we think would be especially good to use at a Make a meal of it event:

Have you considered…?

  • Young people could be involved in the event, too.
  • Sunday afternoons can be one of the loneliest times of the week for those on their own.
